Bitchin' In The Kitchen Sink Drama

entry picture

unrest in the kitchen had

been brewing for some time

a pongy cloth waiting to wipe

the smile off surfaces

and behind closed doors

not a fluid ounce of cupboard love.

a storm in a teacup

saw the kettle let off steam

as a mug flew off the handle.

the bin, as usual, talked rubbish

mixing it with the blender -

the one with the short fuse.

a knife's sharp tongue wagged

about a fork poking its nose in

blaming spoons for stirring it

as a few pots got heavy

and gave the oven a basting.

we have a ward full of hot

and bothered kitchen casualties

a toaster burned out, fridge that

can't chill, dishwasher overloaded,

washing machine that's had its fill

and a sink feeling completely drained.

now it's spread to the living room,

the tele and the phone don't speak

and no-one can shut the radio up.

it talks behind everyone's back,

makes up rumours about

bananas in the bowl getting fruity.

'Like' - I LOVED this! ?
So clever AND funny; as a visually oriented reader, I laughed out loud! Well done, Paul.
Everyone's comments are spot on.
Do you mind if I link it on my blog?
Thanks for the permission, Paul.

I think of the kitchen sketch of Morecambe and Wise Paul. I like the slapstick quality to the poem - a feast of comparisons and quite appropriate where two people share a kitchen and project their angst onto the utensils. (Especially in mine).
Very enjoyable ! Ray Aythangyow.

Ha-ha Suki, very good, they could call in Feastenders (I always felt starved of entertainment when I watched it!).

How we laughed....??

Thanks again Suki.

Hi Paul,

A magical realist kitchen sink drama>They should have scenes like this in East Enders. I might watch it then!

Thanks C?L,

Interesting you and David both mention a part II to this one which has been in the pipeline for weeks and ended up as a sort of hybrid of two pieces 'Kitchen Cupboard Love' and 'Fruit Bowl Fracas'. The latter holds most promise for a part II. We'll see.

Thanks as ever for endorsing my efforts.

excellent Paul. I reckon you could've done at least another dozen or so verses. As David said, a part II beckons and your audience awaits ?

Thank you so dear David, Rose, Cynthia and Raj.

You are so kind for endorsing this loopy output!

Rose, just found your poem from 2014, very wry and very good indeed ?

Hahaha, that was funny Paul. I like the way you've personified everyday kitchen utensils.

I particularly like the various visual layers overlapping in a seamless sequence. Excellent craft.

Believe it or not but I've been singing "Bitchin' in the Kitchen" for the past hour, trying to put Shaggy-type lyrics to it.?

Hilarious, and cleverly concocted with image tumbling over image, each one as funny as, or funnier than, the one before.
