It Was Similar To The Resurrection Oh But Not The Same

it was similar to the resurrection
oh but not the same..

i overheard a mother qualify and explain
something about their
miraculously risen cat..

the mother zoned-in on my baffled expression snagged
and within her reflection she gently flung
she culled and hulled and duffed my air
then away into the supermarket she burned
her piety affronted
and there morphed aglow
an angry mumsnet phantom
i her uninvited shock-absorbing defibrillator..

sunk manlessly skittering
i careered into another supermarket
i thought it would be best
i slipped as sloth
on my dropped pavement gaze deflected
an unappealing squirm of tangled beam
a blinking bevelled-edge bonanza
of furrowed dots and dashes
betwixt
rolling caterpillar eyebrows gone awol..

this street tableaux
a beached rolling wave unfurled
an unabsolved crashing space cadet
as marble-eyed magi liquidised cash-back
a blown-shrunk tumble-weed unredeemable consumer-human
hosed down to my melted meme aspect
a microwaved picasso meaning-gleaner
i retreated
bleeping 'neath a belisha beacon..

my mind wasn't looking its best
in other words
still digesting
such an upper-cut curve
of gnomic intervention
and worse
caught mangled in the musing act
higher moggy theosophy
obviously above my calling
above my resonating aura
no hope for esoteric cognisance
for epiphany no gears..

it was similar to the resurrection
oh but not the same..

burgled soul burger-flipped
the spaceman budgerigar
you don't want fries with that..
please re-corkscrew should you receive..

it was similar to the resurrection
oh but not the same..

so what kind of moggy is this
does it perform miracles
or does it deign only to sit there
silently
enigmatically
testing the new faithful
the old messianic 101 way..

okay so
it was similarly resurrected
but not the same..
similarly..
so what were the key differences
i wondered
as alien long-life noodle aisles
wandering unravelling
a knitting ball would never ponder me..

it was similarly resurrected
oh but not the same..

resurrected
so
was the fluffy one crucified
..should i call the rspca..
..oh but perhaps It has forgiven them..
thus
with no device for non-divine intervention
i resolved i must know my place
sadly one of the heathen brethren..

i looked but could not find
the cat food
which is okay
for i have not a cat
and yet of the holy moggy
i confess i still yearn to believe
that some myths
must be more than mere mythology
for the gentle purring
and laying of paws
this cruel world well and truly needs..

Hi Col,
Many thanks for your feedback!

Really it was just a fun piece triggered by overhearing this mother-to-child conversation. Isn't it amazing what strange seemingly silly experiences can trigger..

"Belisha Beacon and Me" - you get a bottle of champagne just for the title!

Takeot easy,
Suki

Finally made it back Suki and have to agree with all the previous commenteers. I feel there is a hint of Zappa-musing and narrating, like his between chorus story-telling. I might just have to dig out Apostrophe or Over-nite Sensation for my own trip to the grocery store this morning. What an appropriate time to finally read this. Is that what hippies call synergy? I wonder what conversations I will overhear? Probably elderly shoppers aisle-blocking and discussing their latest hospital visits. Get out the way! Coming through!

oh, and any poem which mentions Belisha beacons gets the thumbs up from me. I once wrote a poem called 'Belisha Beacon and Me' - a rather surreal piece of nonsense which will never get posted here! I'd been reading Boris Vian and Peake's odd third part to Gormenghast.

time to go shopping.

I haven't read this yet Suki but I will, I promise, but time's up and I have to dash - it's on my hit list of to do's, honest guv!

I've read this a couple of times, and it gets better with every read. eavesdropping is a brilliant way to get inspiration, but I could never have pulled all that out of one throw-away comment. loved it

My gosh, Suki! This is a jewel. Theosophist vs. technocrat? Clever. Clever. And, Stu mentions the Mars Volta--high praise for this certain gift you have with words and creation.

i love the way you write suki. its clever, witty and just so full of words. this sort of stuff can easily slip into 'the mars volta' levels of surrealness, where things cease to 'mean', but you keep it grounded beautifully.

Thank you Ray,

The basis of this was actually a real conversation that I overheard - that I warped somewhat. Walking while shopping for groceries - all kinds of weird enter my head, which I then inflict on all you lucky folks!

Emer and David -thank you both for your likes!

All the best, and have a great Bank Holiday weekend!

Cheers,
Suki

A kaleidoscope of possible outcomes, topsy turvy and unsettling - yellow submarine and LCD - spectral imaginings and all highly original in your inimitable style Suki.

Miaow is all I can say!
