Moth

An unwelcome intruder

you were, that Wednesday night

you landed on the vinyl

while I tended to the bags

under my eyes before bed.

This, of all places? But why?

Did you want a change of scene,

somewhere to make a fresh start?

Or did you just end up here

and have no idea why?

If your answer's the latter,

don't worry - you're not alone.

Poor thing - you were so timid,

too scared to venture outside

your comfort zone. I'd get in

and you'd be in the same spot;

lifeless, yet alive. You flew

only when you were prompted,

never seeing the wonders

beyond the en-suite bathroom.

Until one day, I tapped you

but this time you didn't fly.

Not even light aroused you.

Foot down on the pedal bin

and in you went. I don't know.

Maybe you didn't give thought

to the limitations

of your months on Planet Earth.

Time was suffocating you

and you didn't even know.

Enjoyed this. I have something of a preoccupation with moths. Loved 'not even light aroused you' and 'lifeless, yet alive'.

yes, ditto the previous comments. 'Foot down on the pedal bin and in you went'. The poem is open to metaphor making. Lots to ponder. Col

Great subject. Much enjoyed both development of the idea and the skillful structure itself.

like this a lot neil, especially the end which is excellent and takes the poem from a slightly humorous look at a little life into more poignant territory
