ON THE OTHER SIDE OF READING

On the other side of Reading

    people smile insanely

    instinctively drive on the right.

On the other side of Reading

bollards and traffic cones  are welcomed

    as artistic design icons

On the other side of Reading

    roundabouts have too many flowers

in a civic equivalent of bliss

as if in celebration of potential accidents.

On the other side of Reading

    skies are seldom memorable,

    property prices always stable

    estate agents less so.

On the other side of Reading

    nightmares are considered normal

while magistrates take their own lives.

On the other side of Reading

    an identity crisis exists

    where there is no identity.

On the other side of Reading

    listless fields survive,

    cows seem awkwardly placed

    under towering cranes

    that beg for development

On the other side of Reading.

Suki, thank you for liking that line - I should have added a few headstones just to set it off!

Stu, you always encourage the urge to write and for that I
thank you. For me to get a like with my skewed style always gives me great pleasure.

Paul, i'm really glad to hit the G spot, thanks a lot. Welcome to this mad club.

David, you make an astute point - I was aware of the dichotomy but you can't get one on the NHS.

Cheers all. Ray

lovely stuff ray, especially the cow line which is extremely clever and reinforces the sadness which is so subtly placed throughout the dry humour and witty writing. always a pleasure to read one of your poems.
