Weary souls

Weary souls, rue the day we set sail
Afloat a ship, amiss in a misty sea
In the still air, still here, praying for a strong gale

Come wind, 'wind come blow us away' we wail
Land ho!, Land ho! we wish to see
Weary souls, rue the day we set sail

Oh how robust we were! Now our frame is so frail
Not all of were religious, but all of us are on one knee
In the still air, still here, praying for a strong gale

Once a merry time, now maritime prisoners withheld without bail
Now so desperate - hungry and thirsty - but once so carefree
Weary souls, rue the day we set sail

Some miss towering skyscraper, others miss rising mountain and sinking dale
Homesick for mother, wife and children we all agree
In the still air, still here, praying for a strong gale

We all came aboard believing a tall tale
We hoped to rob Davy Jones Locker with this skeleton key
Weary souls, rue the day we set sail
In the still air, still here, praying for a strong gale

Thanks Harry. This is my first attempt at a villanelle actually.

A very effective use of the villanelle Jan

I like the way that - although they are becalmed - the robustness, the `religious` reaction to the danger, and the
imagined `backstory` of the victims is `managed` and
brought together by the repetitiveness of the form.

A very impressive use.
