Sixpence

Shorts and thoughts of the shop

Half way up or half way down the hill

Depending which way you came

It was the day of sixpence

Burning in my pocket

Burning hot and sweaty in my hand

The eager clammy fingers for

Sweets and treats

Some stacked on counters

Others in row after row

Of huge glass screw topped jars

Carefully positioned on shelves lining the walls

Cough drops, lemon drops, pear drops

Mints of every conceivable type and kind

Quarter of a pound of this

Quarter of a pound of that

All wrapped up in little white paper bags

Four a penny chews

And sherbet fountains

Fruit salads and black jacks

That in summer always stick to the wrapper

To my fingers

To my teeth

To my trousers

To my knees

Sweet cigarettes

Liquorice pipes

And candied rolling tobacco

On hot balmy days fab lollies

Shaped like rockets

Wise words on sticks

And multi coloured tongues

It was the day of

If you were careful thru pence

Or two fat pennies change

Saved!

To be used another day

Many thanks Ray and Colin much appreciated. This was a shop I used to visit as a Kid in Portslade. Don't know if it exists now. But it was one of many of its kind at the time. I also remember hot roasted peanuts machines, yum.

I'll have to auction this poem Martin and bring the toffee hammer down to sell to the bidder with sixpence to spend, how wonderful those days were. I remember Thursday being sweets day as there was rationing in the fifties!
