My Liverpool

My first foray into gay culture
was Liverpool
She took me by the hand
and
showed me a good time

She was where my girlfriend was
We met all thanks to her
My Liverpool

She was where I got covered in cake
and where we ate fast food
from three different places
in one night

Where I met my best friend
but in the end
My Liverpool
betrayed me
drove my best girl away from me

She helped me heal though
Showed me a good time
introduced me to women
whose names I don't remember
who liked to fuck in my
single bed

That year when I was nineteen
And could afford to be choosy
but wasn't

I had to leave her
She was my expensive mistress
my flat on the docks
my Baby Cream and WAGs Paradise
then she got a facelift
and I didn't really like
who she was when it was
finished.

She had new malls
and shopping halls
and I got lost the last time I visited

Now she's a little voice in my head

Making promises she can't keep

But then I broke my promise too,
Never to leave her...

She's too good for me now
all shiny glass and polished brass
we outgrew each other
it was nobody's fault

and although I'll never live in My Liverpool again
I'll never forget her.

I enjoyed this read when you first posted it and keep coming back to it. I agree with Graham on this one.

What a charming and really clever piece of writing. A very clever allegory, both poignant and insightful.
