Two Poetry School Courses Coming Soon

entry picture
Here are details of two of the courses in the Poetry School's new programme which we would like to draw attention to. One you can do in your pajamas, one will help you earn money as a poet. We look forward to welcoming all new students!

Poetry in Progress
Tutor: Polly Clark
Day / Time: Wednesdays, 7-9pm UK time
Duration: 10 weeks
Start date: 5 October
Price: £98 (£68 concs)
New this year - the Poetry School’s first fully interactive online course. It takes place within its own special website, a custom-built virtual learning environment. This and future online courses will follow the same pattern. You post or circulate poems or writing exercise results in advance of a two hour live chat session which takes place online at a set time during the week. During the chat session, the tutor and your fellow students post responses to the circulated work in a free-flowing live-typed discussion. Each week’s live chat, including the comments on your work, will be archived on the website for you to revisit at your convenience. Polly's course provides feedback on your poetry in progress. She will set a weekly writing task, and as she and your fellow students respond to your resulting work over the duration of the course, you’ll develop skills to improve the sound and sense of your poems. Suitable for intermediate to advanced writers; previous experience of talking about poetry in a supportive critical way would help you take full part in this course. You can enrol in this course from anywhere in the world. All you need is access to the internet. A more detailed guide on how to participate will be provided when you enrol, but please note that online courses are recommended for those who are already comfortable in an online environment as we will only be able to offer limited technical support to students. You will need to have easy access to the internet, ideally via a broadband connection. For more information, and to enrol and pay, please visit http://www.online.poetryschool.com/

Tutoring Poetry Workshops: a course for practising poets
Tutors: Jean Sprackland and Greta Stoddart
Venue: The Arvon Foundation at Lumb Bank
Dates: Monday 19 - Saturday 24 October
Price: £495 / £445 (2 x shared room places) / £295 (3 x subsidised places)
Workshop tutoring can be an important source of income and enjoyment for writers – but where do newly established poets learn the skills to teach them? This unique residential course offers a structured and direct way to build the ideas techniques and confidence necessary to run successful poetry workshops. It will cover essential topics such as planning content, devising writing exercises, giving feedback and managing groups, as well as marketing yourself as a tutor to festivals and other literature organisations. Run a few workshops with the skills you’ve developed, and the course price will have paid for itself!
By application only, please contact programme@poetryschool for details, and for details of the subsidised places.
