Her hero; her first knight

The strongest, kindest man she’d ever known

A warm heart and comforting voice

Never needed to raise his tone

He’d been there for her from her first breath

He’d wiped away so many tears

Held her hand for her first tentative steps

Saved her from her fears

They both knew goodbye was coming

And she was scared of being alone

Does he know how much I love him? She thought

The kindest man I’ve ever known

She held his hand as he held hers

And eased away his pain

He gazed at her- Eyes igniting as he recognised her face

Defying the morphine in his veins

Raising his hand to her lips

She closed her eyes she softly kissed

Prepared for a last embrace

I’ll miss you forever she muttered

The heartache causing her to choke on each word

He responded by gently squeezing her hand

To let her know that he’d heard

Her Achilles was now Priam

Once mighty, but now so weak

Still noble, handsome and dignified

And with all his energy he began to speak...

I will always be with you;

When you see a flower blooming

When every branch is bare

It will be me my lovely

Take comfort that I am always there

She held his hand as he slipped away

And his eyes peacefully closed

Darkness entered her world that day

A shadow cast upon on her soul

Through seasons she battled with her grief

Falling leaves and migrating birds

Still she held on to her belief;

He was a man of his word

His promise fulfilled one winters night

With a chill set in the air

Snow swept though the gardens

Every branch was bare

Stepping out barefoot in first morning light

Crisp snow between her toes

There before her the most beautiful site

A single blooming white rose
