I Learned From My Mother

My mother taught me to never need anyone
That is what I know
That is what I learned

But I had a father who practiced abandonment and convenience
So I learned those too

Those are not the things a father should teach his daughters
I should have found comfort, compassion, a rock
love

I figured out that even if I need
or think I need those things
I don’t

I am my steady rock
I know that

But sometimes wishful thinking gets the best of me
And maybe if I lean a little
There will be some one there to catch me

There never is
That’s okay
I learned from my mother
