MPs to watch Luke Wright's show about the Blair years at special Commons performance

Luke Wright will be performing his award-winning solo show, What I Learned From Johnny Bevan, about the hopes and broken dreams of the New Labour years, at the houses of parliament next week. The invitation came from Labour's Clive Lewis to stage a one-off performance on 27 April to a specially invited audience of MPs and parliamentary workers, after the Norwich South MP saw the show at the Soho theatre in London earlier this year.

Luke said: “I relish the chance to take political theatre right to the heart of the political world - but needless to say, I won’t be toning any of it down.”

He added: “One of the best things about this job is the strange and wonderful places it can take you.” The performance will take place in a committee room at the House of Commons. “It’s quite grand, though not particularly suited to performance, so we’ll have to do the best we can.”

Clive Lewis, a former TV reporter who captured Norwich South for Labour from the Lib Dems last year, said: “‘I’m delighted to have a chance to showcase this brilliant example of the kind of fabulous cultural talent my constituency in Norwich attracts and develops … and it means I get to see it again! I’m really pleased that Luke is enjoying such success around the country with such a political show.”

What I Learned From Johnny Bevan won two awards at the Edinburgh Fringe last summer. Will Labour’s new leader Jeremy Corbyn be attending the performance? Luke said: “We’re hoping JC will be there, but obviously he has a busy schedule. There are a mix of MPs from different parties attending.”

Luke Wright will also be taking his show to Cleckheaton, London, Shrewsbury, Brighton, Bracknell, Bridport, Norwich and Scarborough in the next few weeks. More details

Mention of the Blair name reminds me of the extreme behaviour of the Daily Mail to the name.

Most of the press (since Iraq) like to take the occasional pot shot at it, but with the Mail it is almost an obsession.

There seems to be a competition among the reporters that -when there is some unpleasant item of news - who is the best at managing to associate the name `Blair` to it. I think they must give a daily prize to the reporter who manages the most unlikely link.

It`s beginning to get ludicrous, and makes me feel that they are afraid of him in some way.

Good to see contemporary poetry welcomed in Westminster, and an MP sufficiently open to invite it in.

Maybe an opportunity to set up a Westminster WOL night beckons? ;-)
