VerseMobbers look for recruits to create public poetry encounters

entry picture

A London-based group of poets that aims to create “public poetry encounters”, writing, creating and then performing together ”in unusual and unexpected places” are looking for more recruits. VerseMobbers say on their blog: “We imagine experiences in which the unsuspecting public come face to face with cutting edge spoken word, street poetry and other thought provoking oddities, and then we make it happen.”

If this sounds like your kind of thing, the group wants you to email them at versemobbers@gmail.com with a short bio; examples of your work, preferably links or attachments to live performances and readings; and images of yourself. You also need to be available to travel to London at least once a month and be happy to perform poetry in public. VerseMobbers are also looking for volunteers to help film and record their performances.

VerseMobbers was created by Sadie Davidson, a spoken word artist from Essex, who often performs as her angry alter ego, Barbie the Bard. She said: "We want to bring cutting-edge spoken word out of the cafes and coffee shops and put it out there in public for everyone to love. Or loathe. As long as we're performing powerful poetry which gets a reaction and reaches people emotionally, we're happy.

“We've never done anything like this before - however, all of our current VerseMobbers, myself included, are well used to public humiliation, live performance and have on occasion been members of the public themselves. We know what we'd like to see spontaneously occur on our own streets, but if you want something done you've got do it yourself. Right now we're planning our April Fools Day event, so we will keep you posted, but in the meantime we are welcoming anyone who wants to get involved with this initiative. It's going to be fun."
