Downward Spiral

Downward Spiral

A lonesome circling bird

Pitched against thermals; straining, lifting.

Wing tips - jagged outlines

Conjuring air, magician’s fingers.

Down, spiralling in its

Decreasing predatory circle

Glass bead eye seeks movement -

Perceptible, smothered deep within

Snagged undergrowth tangles.

Swansdown mouse freezes, still

As death; betrayed by trembling whisker.
