Junction Guardians

Junction Guardians

Two wintry trees, bleak sentinels -

Sharp and upward poking.

Scratchy, knuckled digits

Forming thorny, crosshatch arch

Above a pot-holed road.

Leafless pennants unfurl

Against a frozen, silver sky

As disruptive winds encourage

An agitated click of twig on twig.

Stooping, twisted spines

Creak beneath scaly skins.

White lined ribbon severs

Heart to heartwood contact,

Forcing probing, questing roots

To rise above the tarmac,

Witch fingers skirting debris,

Slowly cracking inch by inch

The distance forced between.
