Rock pool

I have around my waist,
a flat line that divides;
breath lip-tight where glue seas
devour,
or a glass photograph of the sky;
some storm cloud promise where the drub
of my thumb print squeezes.

Fish? I have no idea,
just the pearl cute glimpse of my nails,
scavanging in alkaline,
twisted in bitten leaves of seaweed;
popping their warts of oil slick pus
with each air bubble, marbling.

I invite each side of the pool
with my eyes; the distance,
a moon stride mapped
by the sticky bat of an eyelash;
the stroke, being barnicle thick -
ready to string my skin a ribbon of seal meat,
ready to hook my throat.

Afloat and wholy tossed
like a gutted oyster shell
I am,
yet heavy like a tear
in the crease of a whale's eye,
or a hydrogen bubble in space.

Hi Cynthia! Sorry have just seen this now and what a lovely thing to read! It was so so very lovely too to meet you the other week and glorious to hear you read - you have such a beautiful voice!

Hee hee so don't worry about being forward! x

Thank you for your kind support - it is very inspiring to hear such from a writer that you admire for I am an avid reader of yours too. Lets arrange a reading soon and perhaps I shall stop being so microphone shy x

Wizard, just magical. Amazing images with authoritative diction, and shot with stark realism in contrast. If I picked favourite spots, I would wind up quoting most of the poem.

It was wonderful seeing you on Tuesday night. My enthusiasm was genuine, if perhaps too forward. I've been hoping for a long time to meet the woman whose work I so much admire. You know the script - the mind in the flesh - that sort of thing. And it all fitted perfectly. I think reading someone's poetry sincerely is like looking through private windows, with unspoken invitation. It's really hard not to develop a sense of bonding. But I must be more circumspect in future.

thanks for reading Ann. I try everyday to minimalise what I say but then think sometimes you just have to say what you say! x

I always enjoy your poems Marianne though sometimes I feel they are almost too thick with imagery. I'd love to see what you'd come up with if you had a go at being minimal.
