REPOSSESSION DEPRESSION.

REPOSSESSION DEPRESSION.

Repossession

Invites depression

Round for drinks,

Before the ink

Has dried

On papers,

Signed and

Cried over.

As lives taper,

Tumbling,

Back

Down the ladder.

It makes me mad!!

Because we were encouraged

To climb.

Sold by the smile

Of greed.

The need to feed

The country’s coffers.

The need to bleed

With special offers

For the

Young,

Plump,

First time buyers.

Easy prey for

The experienced liars

Who lay in wait.

Sealing their fate.

With their bullshit.

“You can afford it”

“We’ll lend you treble

On your earnings.”

Now you feel

The money burning

A hole in

Your future.

“We’ll consider

Your wife’s.”

“We’ll guarantee

You’ll be made for life.”

Oh by the way,

We forgot to mention.

If you were thinking,

Or had any intention

Of starting a family,

Or going away.

Seek family planning.

Consider what you have to pay

Each and every month,

For the next forty years.

This advice is not for delicate ears

Though.

As you balance precariously

On the bottom rung.

With a financial millstone

Expertly hung,

Drawn,

And quarterly paid.

Could this be the mistake you made?

When you dreamt of owning a home.

Now your mortgage

Has suddenly grown

Into a monster.

Raging, running

Out of control.

Staging cunning

Ways to enrol you

Onto the list of,

“Struggling to pay”

Soon you find you’re living

Day to day.

Hour to hour.

Feel depression begin to flower

Out of feeling hopeless.

Finding now you can cope less

Than you did before.

When excitement ruled.

Before you were schooled

In the race called rat.

Remember when

The wallet was fat?

Now you can’t afford to eat,

And you believed

Your life complete.

How can you afford to heat?

A house that only seems to beat

You up.

Showing you the empty cup

Of plenty.

Soon your house will be empty

Too.

Waiting for the newbies

Who,

Will be under the same impression

 As you were.

Before repossession,

Dispossession, and

Depression

Blew your world apart.

Now you’re going

To have to start

All over again.

Readjust your train

Of thought.

And forget about the thief

You almost bought,

And rent instead.

Born out of a comment on a previous offering. Never tried writing to a theme before. Strange but enjoyable. Thanks Yvonne.

Love this line it echos the desperation and cynicism of the whole mortgage cycle. Love the whole poem. You've definitely got a way with words and poetry.

Renting would be ok if rent were cheaper. It seems to me that it isn't a lot different to a mortgage though - although I realise that would change if interests rates go up - and there is obviously a huge difference between the North and South house prices.

It's a pretty depressing scenario for the young generation really - they are stuffed unless they have wealthy parents. House prices just need to come down - I'm totally against what they are doing to stoke them up. There needs to be a re-adjustment or we are all just making the banks rich. Maybe they should tax second homes. There you go - a radical thought from a non left of liberal thinker ;

Interesting poem - thanks.

Yes - good piece this, lots of valid points in it and would perform well. I liked the 'race called rat'. There's a typo I think in 'first rime buyers' - should be 'time'?

This really strikes a chord with me. Luckily or unluckily I am 30 and still renting. Property ownership for me seems as unlikely as winning the lottery. Yesterday, I viewed at tiny, shoebox apartment in a newly built complex where they were offering the option of 100% mortgage. I was told that, if I didn't have a £20,000 deposit to hand, then I'd have to pay £750 a month for the next 30 years. Unappealing and depressing. Love the poem though.
