Examination

entry picture

At last we reach examination day
and chewing on my full-of-hope 2B
I sit in silence at my desk and pray
for one last chance of saving my degree,
all work evaporating from my head
as if I’d never done a day’s revision
and spent the time with magazines in bed.
Here’s question one. I make my first decision.
With A, I say I’m sorry for each action.
With B, I say I should have been more bold.
With C, I say I’m careless to distraction.
       With D, I say my dedication’s cold.
With E, I say I may not earn your love.
I fail the test. It’s all of the above.

Nick: Thank you! The first two quatrains (are supposed to) form an octet. ababcdcdefefgg is a pretty standard Shakespearean sonnet form.

Yvonne was joking that if I added a letter to my name I'd have fourteen letters, to parallel the fourteen lines of a sonnet.

Hi Thomas. I enjoyed this sonnet. The 'full of hope 2B' is such a good image encapsulating the candidate's fears and prayers.( graphic description?) But I like the penultimate line for its revelation of perhaps another layer in this poem.
Top Marks!
By the way, Mr.King of the Sonnets, if you have a middle name and use that initial, you would have a 14-letter name.
( I think maybe I should get out more!) XX
