You Can See The Hills – Royal Exchange

entry picture

we thought our poets might be interested in this coming-of-age drama that premieres in The Studio at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre from Wednesday 24 September to Saturday 11 October, before transferring to London’s Young Vic Theatre.

Described as crackling, candid and witty, the play revolves around teenager Adam on his journey through a Pennine town secondary school to discover if the boy can ever become a man. Recounting his life, loves, family and friends, this poignant monologue follows Adam growing up and dealing with the many adolescent problems, such as hormones, homework and lust-filled dreams.

Speaking about his play writer and director Matthew Dunster says:
“It’s autobiographical. Some characters and situations have been merged ?" but everything happened. I wanted to write about young people. I think ASBOs are disgusting and are part of an obsession with the demonising of young people. I decided that the best thing I could do was write truthfully about my own teens and how much violence, bullying and sex was involved.”
