SPINEBREAKERS ANNOUNCES ‘RHYTHM AND RHYME’ COMPETITION

London, 22 July 2008...  Spinebreakers, Penguin’s teen online book community, and the National Year of Reading today launched Love Lyrics and invited teens to follow in the footsteps of Nirvana to re-write iconic books, such as White Teeth, as lyrics.

The competition will see the winning entry have their song performed live by popular electro poet duo Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip.

The Love Lyrics competition was developed by Spinebreakers and the National Year of Reading to celebrate the importance and impact of lyrics. The idea is to inspire teens to create their own lyrical classics from a range of modern and traditional Penguin novels chosen by the teenage editors of Spinebreakers. The titles include Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer.

Jade Hunter, 15, Spinebreakers Teen Editor said:

“So many young people are interested in music, and in books. Love Lyrics is a brilliantly simple and fun way for teens to showcase their creativity and love of books in a new and exciting way, which is what Spinebreakers is all about.”

Honor Wilson-Fletcher, Project Director for the National Year of Reading said:

“This is a great beginning to the National Year of Reading’s campaign to celebrate the extraordinary role that lyrics play in our reading lives. A competition targeted at teens, judged by teens via a teen network and a teen publisher is a powerful and fun way to get the message across that reading comes in many shapes and forms ?" and that they are all valid”

Scroobius Pip said:

“For me lyrics and poetry are of huge importance. When I write it is all about telling a story and getting a message across. Getting people (particularly younger generations) to realise the enjoyment and pleasure that can be taken from both reading and writing creatively is hugely important. A lot of pop music these days has very little content and meaning so it’s great to see Love Lyrics getting people to focus on lyrics and creating their own”

The Love Lyrics competition is open to teenagers aged 13 to 18 and can be entered at www.spinebreakers.co.uk/competitions/pages/lovelyrics.aspx The first 100 entries will win a Penguin book and ten runner ups in the competition will win goodie bags. Closing date for the competition is Friday 3rd October.
