dust

My dear

You look so small

Beneath it all

The curving arc of life

The world

And all we know.

Troubled, taken in pain,

Your heart’s refrain

Is to battle hard

Against it.

But just let go.

For all we know

Life and love and everything!

That’s our eternal span.

Enjoy it while you can.

For dust is all and dust is - us

My master.

The heavens are made from it!

Some interesting ideas in this Ann, but it feels, to me, very much like a first draft.

I really like this Ann. Really resonated with me, the week I've had.

A metaphysical moment indeed! Of course it is. It is a lovely, sincere poem, Ann, resonating with thinking people. The last line is superb. Anyone who grows older with all mental faculties intact must have such searching thoughts about the meaning of life. Organized religion capitallizes on this human bent, forcing set ideas into our psyches from babyhood, often leaving little space for us to develop thinking for ourselves. Since 'eternity is but a moment', surely it might be 'this moment'. So, I figure, eternity is exactly what you make it, moment by moment.

Thanks for comments. Just a coincidence re title Dave, I'm sure the "we are dust" idea is in loads of poems, tho I did enjoy your poem too! I wrote it very quickly and bits of it don't make sense (if the span of life is eternal why do we have to enjoy it while we can?) And the title was just the only word from the poem that could have been a title really.

Are you having a metaphysical moment Ann? Do you know much about the Metaphysical poets? might be worth a look, Henry Vaughan being my personal pick of them, Win x

Dust as we are, the immortal spirit grows... William Wordsworth. I wonder what he would make of WOL? Nice one Ann. Win x
