Hard Work

It's hard work racing rats,
but even worse with flying bats
and while we're in the rhyming mode
best not overlook our domestic cats.

For while some beasts are keen to please
and try their best to bend their knees
there's many more that will resist
and in their own ways say 'do desist'

Why is it some domesticate with ease
while others at their best will tease
the parrots with their love of jest
will come out with words quite unblessed

And donkeys that will stand their ground
are obstinate as many have found,
while camels spit and take their time
and ponies throw you in the slime...

So just who is it that's in charge,
ourselves or beasties small and large
that seem to know when they can win
and if we protest make such a din?

Man makes believe he is the best
but frankly when put to the test
few are canny in the subtle art
of getting that old mule to start!
