Roam the Rows in Chester

entry picture

Roam the Rows, a summer event in Chester on Saturday 9 & Sunday 10 August 2008, is a celebration of the city, its retailers, the cultural heritage and the people of Cheshire. The organisers want to attract more visitors and curious shoppers to ‘Roam the Rows’ during the summer months of Chester when there are fewer events on offer. It is also a fantastic opportunity to provide a platform for local and regional artists.

Chester has many unique features, one of the most notable being the Rows, the covered walkways which run along four main streets of Chester city centre, all meeting at the High Cross. Roam the Rows is an exploration and celebration of these features, inviting shoppers and visitors to investigate the sites and spectacles that can be found whilst strolling along the Rows of Chester.

Chester Performs wants to celebrate and utilise this unique feature by presenting it as a performance space to the city of Chester during a two day Summer Arts festival. Chester Performs aims to animate the city centre for the two days, bringing a sense of celebration and activity to Chester.

CALL FOR ARTIST SUBMISSIONS…
One of the main focal points of the event is to highlight what Chester has to offer not only in terms of shopping and architecture, but also in performing and visual arts. The organisers are also hoping to broker relationships with some of the retailers and businesses around the city centre, with work taking place around or outside their location.

Chester Performs is asking for the submission of new or existing pieces of work from artists and groups, who feel they have a visual or performance piece that would interact well with the City of Chester. The piece itself could encompass any method of performing arts, which would work well with an unconventional performance space such as the Rows.

The Rows are unique in shape and structure. The city has developed around them since they were first built, giving way to unique hidden spaces that have unending potential for artistic presentation. There are long corridors of walkways, courtyards, and raised platforms, spaces where audiences can look up, across and down at happenings. There are rails, fences and angled platforms that can be used for displays.

Proposals are sought from performers, visual artists, dancers, singers, photographers, actors, writers and anything in between!
