ten years,

and a lot can happen,

decades may grow

or contract, seeming

longer in youth

short in old age,

they can shift mood,

celebratory if happy

funereal when sad,

one’s eighth decade

hides subterfuge,

mistrust and anxiety,

its path is unsteady

counterfeit,

I must tread carefully
