“I Don’t Believe in My Wings”

I used to fly,
touching the softness of clouds,
dancing with the wind, thinking I had grasped everything.

My wings...
once showed the happiest version of me,
when I thought I had conquered the sky,

Mother,
she was one of those who always saw me smile,
with wings attached, like fate, as if I were born to fly.

But today,
the wind that once felt like a friend now feels foreign.

And the high sky is no longer a dream.

Maybe this time,
I want to confess:
“Mom, I don’t believe in my wings anymore.”

An interesting concept, I don't have any either but I do like looking up at the clouds. They are inspirational!

This poem was inspired by a dialogue between Aurora and Maleficent in one of the most poignant scenes from the film Maleficent:
Aurora: “Do all the fair people have wings?”
Maleficent: “Most do.”
Aurora: “Then why don’t you? All the other fairies fly.”
Maleficent: “I had wings once. They were stolen from me—that’s all I wish to say about it.”
Aurora: “What color were they? Were they big?”
Maleficent: “So big, they dragged behind me when I walked. And they were strong. They could carry me above the clouds and into the headwinds. And they never faltered, not even once. I could trust them.”
