Forgive, Not Forget

A time will come when we forgive,

Though that time is not yet;

But even when forgiveness comes,

None of us will forget.

We won’t forget the agony,

The sadness and the waste;

We won’t forget the insults hurled

With puerile lack of taste.

We won’t forget our cities wrecked,

Our soldiers blown to bits;

We won’t forget the fearful nights,

The lethal missile hits.

We won’t forget the terror which

Caused millions to flee;

We won’t forget when your boys laughed

And killed our men with glee.

And we won’t forget the pretexts,

The half-truths and the lies,

The bare-faced fake denials

When someone this side dies.

Posterity demands no less

When history is made;

For open wounds to start to heal,

The present must not fade.

Now that makes for a more corresponding connection than my poem of the same title which is more on a personal level and definitely not ready for public consumption in its present state. Been putting it off for quite a while and got a jolt reading your much more well composed one. 🌷

Thank you very much, Rolph. Yes, true forgiveness requires healing and reconciliation. Otherwise, the old wounds just continue to fester, as we have seen all around the world.

Dear Stephen,

The way you balance the possibility of forgiveness with the necessity of remembering is poignant and reflective. You capture the deep scars of conflict—emotional, physical, and societal—and the weight that history carries. I especially appreciate how you highlight that true healing cannot come without acknowledging the past, no matter how painful. It’s a sobering and necessary reflection on the importance of memory and the costs of forgetting.
Fantastic words!
Cheerio,
Rolph

Indeed, Graham. Three years of tragedy and sacrifice and so much comes to depend on this moron and his bunch of freeloading cronies.

And my thanks to everyone who liked this poem. Forgiveness will come, though not quite as quickly as the Pope seems to think it should.
