Mighty Mite / Earwig

In March 1914 an earwig held up 600 tonnes of rail traffic at Hounslow Station…

Earwig / Mighty Mite

When everything came to a stop
The signal said nothing should go
The hustle and bustle of London life
Was forced to slow down in Hounslow

They checked every inch of the line
For buckles and cracks in the track
But as nothing was found on the great underground
Not a train could go out or come back

An investigation was ordered
By a controller, or other bigwig
It seems one junction box, was an unorthodox
Home for a fearless earwig

He’d nibbled and burrowed inside it
As that creature might do, for his aim
Was not to short-circuit but live like a hermit
And oddly that brought him some fame

He’s cheered to this day at the football
And those wanting a simpler life
Who aim to stay sane, despite modern strain
But who daren’t cut a wire with a knife

Though few know his origin story
We ought to enjoy this hero
His meddlesome pause deserves some applause
And his name is, of course, Earwig-O
