Devil

entry picture

An avaricious devil is mankind;

He goes and grabs all things that he can find.

Perhaps he’s not aware that it’s unkind;

Faced with the danger, he says ‘never mind’.

Mankind intends to decimate this place,

To slash and burn and eat up every space,

With acquisition as some kind of race

To mop up Earth’s resources with no trace.

The monster has now caught us in his trap:

A wonderland of throwaway gift-wrap,

Where dreams and base desires overlap;

At this rate it will wipe us off the map.

So put it this way, where will be the end?

Will we wake up, or shall we just pretend

Salvation lurks around some hopeful bend,

Where infinite consumption is our friend?

Thank you for generous comment, Manish. Auracle - yes, infinite consumption will clash with the finite planet. Perhaps it already has! I'm aware that a poem is better at indentifying a problem than finding a solution!

And my thanks to Graham, Hugh, Stephen A, Holden, Tim, David, Bethany and Rob for liking.

A superb poem, Stephen, as always. The title, and the first line is so true.

Infinite consumption of a finite planet seems to be self-destructive 😀

Human rights organizations have destroyed the one-child policy, didn't they?

Then what are the other options left?
