Donations are essential to keep Write Out Loud going

Minefield

It has been quiet here so far;

The trick is getting through the day:

Ticking off hours, counting clouds,

Throwing pebbles into the lake.

I’m just one of the backroom boys,

I scrub up and write the labels.

It’s soldiers I feel sorry for;

Christ, there goes one, then another.

Poor bastard, sent flying towards

No-man’s land. I suppose that he’s….

That’s number five this week, I think,

Plus the medic who lost his legs.

All’s fair in love and war, they say;

We don’t get too much love round here.

Thanks for the comments, Greg and Graham. I think 'desolation' sums it up, Greg. Behind some of the cheery TV interviews with soldiers at the front, you can sense the fear and apprehension in these young eyes.

Good point, Graham. Someone I spoke to recently said 'You don't hear much about it now'. Depressing to see all the African leaders and diplomats shaking hands with Putin at his summit today. He is, after all, wanted by the ICC as a war criminal.

And thanks to Ruth and Hélène for the likes.

I noticed that the BBC Homepage had nothing about Ukraine on it today! It is becoming death by a thousand cuts! He must be stopped sooner than later.

A quiet opening that lures you further in to a poem of utter desolation, all the more effective for being understated. Keeping our attention on the issue that really matters, while some of us still bicker over Brexit. Thank you, Steve.
