I can read all the books

in the world

but until I feel it down deep in my bones,

it ain't gonna make a damn bit of difference.

Knowledge ain't facts,

I'm tellin' you,

knowledge is experience.

So feel it,

then you will know it.

 

Gathering Rocks

 

Take it slow & easy

he said as he rolled away in his pickup truck.

I tried to remember his advice as I grappled with my crazy urban life.

He returned safe & sound

some days later

with his arms full of rocks

he had gathered along the way.

Did you know rocks can speak? he asked.

Yes! Yes! I said, 

I hear they even sing.

We placed the rocks in our garden

& that evening

watched the sun set

on their quiet, gentle shadows.
