We will not find new palaces, They do not exist.
We will not be buried overseas
This fixity is deep within the blood
Always return to the streets of Kōnstantinoupolis;
In the same neighborhoods Cavafy roamed
We, no longer dare to go, being Greek and Christian,
In an Ottoman city I will not grow old ˙
Churches turned to Mosques by the edict of Sultan Erdogan
Always arrive back in this city,
You are sailing to Byzantium
For elsewhere - does not exist
There is no road out of Kōnstantinoupolis
We have ruined all the earth.
Do not say history is immutable
I do not think so
Travel through the Bosporus
See! Everywhere is a lesser land,
No other city but Kōnstantinoupolis
Lives in the memory thus.
Why did the west not reclaim our city?
We immortalise stone in words
So many hearts buried here
Memory fades, lovers wither
Only the city remains
As both a warning and a prophecy
Of a greater ruin.
