Sonnet 18 Revisited

Inspired by an episode of ‘Paddington’

and with apologies to the Bard!

--------------------------------------------------

Shall I compare thee to a marmalade

Sandwich?  Thou art more wholesome and more sweet.

Even if the filling was farmhouse made

And the bread was baked using artisan wheat!

Marm’lade sandwiches have all too short a date.

They’re eaten before the kettle has boiled!

Our love must avoid a similar fate,

Greedily devoured and too soon spoiled.

The sandwich was Seville orange flavoured

From which the taste is ever slow to fade,

Just as our love is enjoyed and savoured,

Even as the light disappears into shade.

Your love is sustaining, tasty and free.

Your love and sandwich both give life to me!

Thanks Stephen. I was only Larkin around. I hope Shakespeare isn't turning in his grave haha 😊

Almost better than the original, John. To quote someone else who borrowed from it - 'Perfick'.
