The Tide Is Changing

entry picture

The Tide is Turning

The news that is broken

When you know someone has to leave

Is hard to hear

But waiting for them to leave

When the news is understood

Is harder

Reminding ourselves that the person who we care about

Is not going on a one way trip to the moon

And knowing we will see them again

Provides some comfort

But does not fully take away the sting

Of them leaving

Employment—relationships— travels— tragedy—personal fulfillment— sickness—and death

Are things that keep us here

Or take us somewhere else

At times these movements are planned and calculated

However

Change doesn’t always ask us for permission to proceed— when we are ready

I often dream that I am able to hop on a five minute bus ride

To see my loved ones all over the world

At other times

I try and bargain with the universe

And offer to do the longest haul flight there ever was

With the worst airline on earth

To be given a chance to see those— who have actually departed

However— these people are further away— than my friends in Europe

So even with multiple stopovers

The plane just isn’t meant to go that far

At least today—anyway

We cannot force people to stay

As they are on their journey and so are we

Change is like shift work

I’ve decided

You never really stop feeling exhausted from it

But you find a way to get used to the feeling

Or so I tell myself

When I say— I am at peace with you leaving

While I actually wish you would stay

So in the meantime— I’ll just have to miss you

And embrace the love we share—despite the distance

Each day
