Thief in the night

entry picture

You slipped in like a thief in the night, undercover of so much darkness,

Unseen, unheard, unknown you brought even more darkness with you.

Long lasting, perpetual darkness was your perfume,

Your gifted lingering presence hung in lounge, ward, and bedroom.

Like a silent pickpocket you slithered through the crowd,

With the deftest of fingered touches, you chose and left your mark.

Whispering in the wind, your promise of ominous prowess,

Many stood and clapped on doorsteps – so many left breathless.

Into the shadows you sank, swag bag bulging with your booty,

How could a tiny frame carry such wonderous plunder?

Not cash, not wallets, not pearls, or rings,

But priceless your trophies; our stolen things.

You filched our jewelled smiles and golden kisses,

Gilt-edged hugs, gossamer spun conversations, and silk skin touches.

Brazen in your burglary, you ransacked our souls’ residence,

Then left us to count the cost, but not in pounds, shillings, and pence.

◄ What did they see?
