As we moan about being pinged 
the odd empty shelf in the shop
Question the need for restrictions 
and when they will finally stop

Covid is not the leading story 
making the headlines today
It is the people of Afghanistan 
losing their freedom day by day 

As the Taliban take control
Kabul City the last to fall 
The news reports on TV
beyond comprehension to us all

In an attempt to flee the country
prepared to pay any price
Desperate souls take drastic measures
make the ultimate sacrifice 

Many questions are being raised 
how and why has it come to this
As we watch these news scenes in horror
of a country in crisis

Over the past eighteen months
we have all lived through new normal ways 
Followed the rules and the pathway out
celebrated “freedom days” 

I hope the country of Afghanistan 
will soon return to normal ways 
I pray the people of Afghanistan 
will enjoy their freedom again one day
