In a Manger Snug and Warm

270 Augustas Valente did what he was told,

sometimes it offended him

the orders he carried out,

He was a decent man,

a sensitive man, why

He even wrote poetry,

but orders were orders you know.

So 270 Augustas Valente

did not flinch

as he cut the throats of

the child and it's parents,

He carried out his orders

like the good soldier that he was.

After the slaughter

270 Augustas Valente

met his mates and

had a beer or ten,then

He wrote a poem.

Thanks Cynthia, yes it's true, nothing changes, my favourite saying just about sums it up.

The more it changes
The more it stays the same.

A chilling few lines to encapsulate the soldier's mentality since 'following orders' began in very ancient times. The title is a master of irony.
