If I Was A Sailor

If I  were a sailor I’d keep my boat spick and span,
Trim the sails, scrub the decks and sing sea shanties about the woes of a travelling man,
Ride the ocean waves across the world and revel in the freedom while I can,
Leave my troubles behind me in the very ports where they began,
Oh the things that I would see from those travel weary decks,
Those that travelled with me would stand on tip toes, straining necks,
To see gargantuan icebergs dapple the horizons as the tiniest of specks,
As we’d skim the surface of the world, ever moving, never stopping to reflect,
On all the hearts we’d broken at the shores where lost lovers sleep,
On all the promises we’d made and never meant to keep,
On all the hopeful eyes we’d filled with tears but never saw them weep,
As we skimmed across the surface never chancing to swim in the deep,
For we would be the reckless travellers full of wild romance,
Never staying long enough to give true love a chance,
Never planting roots because the waves call out their merry dance,
Never seeing past the surface of this great expanse,
And we would all be shallow though travelled ‘cross the deep,
Always staying at the surface even when we rest in shallow sleep,
Blinded by the Sunlight that across our decks would creep,
Minded that the tiresome, “Shepherd,” always seeks the wayward sheep,
But one day we would realise we can’t ignore his call,
One day our frail ship would fail and from it’s decks we’d fall,
And hearts we’d broke and eyes we’d filled with tears? We would see them all,
And know at heart our souls would be as empty as our tales were tall,
And finally we’d let the waters drag us to its bed,
And wash our skins of crusted salts and fears and faults from busted heads,
And we would sink to the abyss as if our limbs were cast of lead,
And we would finally know the depths in all their glory, free of dread.

To be honest Paul, he was a cantankerous old bugger, who lived much of his life like a car crash, but he was very funny and we all loved him, and for all his faults he had an honest soul. I don't have any problem with religion, people are free to think what they like, it's their life, and you never know, they might be right?
But I don't think so, I think the only way we live on after death is in the hearts and minds of others and in the DNA of our children. ❤

It's funny you know. My dad was an atheist as am I and he chose, on the subject of wood, a natural burial with an oak planted over him, thus giving a little back for all we've taken. After experiencing that I chose the same thing and if some small part of me lives on in one of our symbiotic partners on this planet, then that's all good with me.

?Thanks Po, I'm really pleased you liked it. I've had a bit of a, "Dry spell," just recently (Pardon the pun), so I'm pleased that it's water that came to my rescue, my favourite of the 4 elements.
