Daleks at Fenchurch Street on a rainy day

Quick, take off your shoes and rush inside;

Conceal yourself and turn your back,

Defy invasion and the wet.

Dripping Daleks are on attack;

Though dry, there is nowhere to hide.

A trifle short on easy charm

And rather awkward to disarm,

They have little conversation

Even in this busy station.

‘You will be exterminated’

About as friendly as they get.

(Film of this would be X-rated).

Yes, thanks Philipos.The area near Fenchurch Street is very interesting and full of history. You can turn one way for Aldgate, the other way for the Bank of England or double back to the Tower of London. Fascinating things to see everywhere.

Many tales could be told of Fenchurch Street in a yesteryear capacity when smog lay thick and the various city characters are still recalled by some of us in the older brigade - I often chortle about them sometimes.

Occasionally I would be invited into the Mansion House for a cuppa and a sit down but only by the security guard wanting a natter as the city ghosts perambulated outside, sensed but unseen.

Further along towards St Pauls could be found the buried remains of the famous poet John Dunne, who was undone and imprisoned for a while for marrying the daughter of a tycoon without permission of the dad.

Of course all was forgiven, and Dunne was later ordained Dean of this famous cathedral. I am quite fond of his work even to this day.

City events often feature in my memory.

Thanks for reminding me of some.

Thanks to Paul and Greg. Yes, 'Take back control'. Would even Daleks stoop to that? If they could stoop, that is. I always thought Jeremy Corbyn would have made a good Dr Who, if he got himself a scarf.

I'll work on the film, Paul. A sort of Brief Encounter directed by Tarantino. I'll get myself a bigger sofa!

The Daleks are everywhere, Stephen, and particularly in Downing Street, never mind Fenchurch Street, repeating 'Take back control'. Haven't you noticed?

A bit of light relief, I hope, unless you're in Fenchurch Street.
