I've known only war

since I was five

I’ve had to fight to stay alive

momma’s little soldier’s

never been off the front lines

from the scenes at home

to the enemy’s mind control

to the captive at school

I’ve resisted

sometimes I’ve found allies

only to see them die

I thank you for your time

in the trenches

from the grind of this job

to the march for your love

I’ve soldiered on a grunt

behind the lines

one day I’ll drop my guns

I haven’t seen that day come

only a horizon that remains

in the distance

Thank you. It's the lives of many of my students.
