Muriel and Me

I wrote this following a writing workshop in Stockport. It was prompted when we were asked at break time if we would like a cup of tea.

Muriel and Me

A cuppa tea?

- For Muriel and me?

- Make it G&T…

And if it’s no trouble,

Please make it a double….

These writing classes are superb:

We learn about the written word –

Half-time, we have a cup of tea –

But as for Muriel and me…..

We think how nice

A G&T

Would be………

But, lest we both end up all squiffy

And finish sounding just like Piffy

On a rock cake, tea will be

The best option for M and me…..

(with apologies to Muriel…………..)

Its an old Lancashire saying Dorinda "Piffy on a rock bun". To me it means you`ve been "stood up or left out" .

I have looked this up and can only find that the phrase means to be left out/ignored. Who Piffy is I cannot fully explain: some commentaries say that it is likened to patience. I think Piffy is a rather rotund and red-faced little chap who wears plus-fours and looks a bit like Humpty Dumpty. He's my version of Piffy anyway.....

Hi Dorinda,

It's a long time since I heard the phrase "like Piffy on a rock cake." I've tried to find out who Piffy was, without success, but I think it's a lovely and quaint old saying. Do enlighten me if you can!
As Cynthia says, more power to your workshop!

Regards,
A.E.

The workshop must be working. This is piquant and funny.
