Obviously, at least one person must be online for this to work - lol.

Sometimes find this (the vertical bar with names and pics)breaks up, eg if I'm on the Poets' Showcase page. Don't maybe like the look of it as much as wot it looked like before, dare I say. xxxx

It is probably still there - for some reason it gets obscured by the poet profile picture.

This would probably be my only negative comment...

I do not like the new 'users online' format, because if there are more than 7 or 8 people online - you cannot see them all, as you cannot scroll down...

What if someone fabulous is online - I would never know!

I know! His dog photo takes up like two people worth - LOL

Oops... I just checked... So does mine actually - Ha ha

Question mark people take up the same amount of space... Now I don't feel so bad because there are quite a few of them out there.

By the way Paul... I know this is a bit off topic, but I love the screaming photo of you on the front page : )

But is he screaming Francine? Who knows what Paul Blackburn is up to right there on our home page. Perhaps we should be offering a link...

As for question mark people - I'm all for tolerance but I think they should be banned - they are all a total waste of space - show us your face or your muzzle or else...

If this website had enough...somethings...he'd be jumping up and down and licking the screen. He's a proper avatar!

Well, actually, he's a she (Dilly, our dog)...but I haven't got any photos of my goodself that reflect my true character, captures my essential good humour, my debonair charm and raffish ebulliance...whilst leaving an air of devillish sex appeal.....which, I know is asking alot of a thumbnail. Mine always make me look pissed.

Just to be thick as usual ;-) when I click on the "tags" I only get one poem, it seems. How do I get to the rest of them? I presume the numbers in brackets on the home page refer to how many poems there are in each catagory. (e.g. women (8) or whatever.)

Ann, they are shown per month. You can see the breakdown per month on the right when you are looking at a particular months tagred poems. Win

Oooooh, I see! (I don't really, I'll just sit in the corner and think about it.) Surely, if a poem is tagged . . . oh well. Never mind.
ALSO, how come Nov wollops are still listed but December wallops have gorn?
Thu, 28 Jan 2010 07:49 pm

Hi Ann. Maybe less than 7 poets tagged thie poems retrospectively (as advised by Isobel) If so that tag subject may have fallen off the bottom of the list rankings. Win

Re tagging. I think we all got too shy to tag our WALLOP poems last month. I kept looking to see if any of the other nominated people had tagged their poems and they hadn't. Not wishing to seem like a big head, I didn't tag mine. Isobel probably gets very cross about this.;-) We are all so modest! (But we are lovely!)

I don't get cross Ann! In fact I would never have known had you not mentioned it LOL - I just don't have the time to check up on people or to worry about it... I ask people, to make it easier for other people wanting to read them. In fact, last time I tried looking at a tagged subject, I had problems getting them up, like you. I put it down to my own technical inexpertise! Rather than blog individual poets asking them to tag, I shall just put a general message up on my WOLOP result blog this time - this will save me a lot of time. If people can't be arsed to read the results, I'm presuming they wouldn't be arsed to tag either. I'm not fussed either way. People soon get a feel for whose poetry they like to read and will make the effort to read it if they really want to.

It must be a lot of work for you Isobel, all this WALLOPPING and I think most of us appreciate it (I do!)As I said, the reason I didn't tag my poem last time as a runner up was that I don't think the winner tagged hers (I could be wrong) and I was being polite! "After you!" "No, please, after you!" "NO . . .etc etc"!! Very english disease! If I ever get nominated again I promise I will tag myself! (Sounds like having an ASBO!) xx

Anne....don't knock ASBOS. For some kids it will be the only qualification they ever get!

(Jo Brand...I think)

Izzy...I was only joking. I have a poem in me somewhere about how one of my earliest 'amorous encounters' turned into a horror story (for me) because the young lady in question took my 'oooh...arr, missus' innuendos seriously and imagined that I really would enjoy a 'little bit of pain'.

I didn't...but hadn't got the heart to tell her...whilst she chewed the life out of me. I had to wear a polo neck for weeks (just when they went out of fashion) and couldn't walk straight for days.

I don't understand why anyone likes that sort of thing....but, I'm willing to learn!

I didn't tag mine cos I didn't know I should, I saw other people had done it but only after the announcement so I thought it would be like I was crowing and also I don't know if I'd have the technical know how...(re Ann's english reserve type comment too bloody right, darn this Englishness, darn it to heck!)I also love Wolop and Isobel's dedication to Wolopkind and will cast my vote in a minute!

Is it a new thing on WOL that when I scroll down through the bloggs I used to be able to keep on scrolling until the start of the month and now I can only get so far and it says "see more" or something before I can delve further back. This doesn't sound a problem, but if you look at a poem then go back to the bloggs you find yourself back to the most up to date ones and have to start scrolling back from the beginning etc etc and it gets almost as tedious as this comment! ;-)

Ann- I've only just noticed that now you mention it.

I must say I find it a pain. I often like to look back and see what people have been commenting (not just on my stuff I hasten to add!)Now it takes longer as there are more processes to go through. I find it off putting. Other than that this site is the most wonderful thing since my home made bread (don't like sliced!)

Hi
We decided we had to do something about the number of blogs displayed as some members, with slow connections/PCs, were having serious problems because of these huge numbers.

Thanks to Ann for pointing out that error - our tech team are addressing it.

In the mean time, you may want to try opening each blog in a new tab when you want to view it and then closing the tab to go back to blog list page where you left it. In both Internet Explorer and Firefox, you can open a new tab using any of the following methods.
1) Use the middle button (scroll wheel on some mice) to click on the link instead of the left button
2) Hold down the Ctrl key while clicking on the link with the left button
3) Right click the link and then select "Open in new tab"

I find I can't look back through blogs as easily. I used to read a blog and then press the back button and it would take me back to exactly the date I was up to in blogs. It takes me right back to the beginning now - it is so annoying.
I will try this new tab thingey you are suggesting Paul - but it looks a lot more fiddly.

Hi Paul. Is I.T. any further forward in trying to solve the problem with blogs. By that I mean, being able to view a poem and then return to the same time and place in the blog list. It is incredibly tiresome being taken back to the beginning of blogs every time you look at a poem, particularly since the number of blogs posted is exploding on a daily basis.
I am not good at opening new tabs and messing around like that - nor I suspect are others, judging from comments I've heard. It would be heavenly to return to the old system. I think the way it is now is putting people off looking through blogs or commenting. I used to enjoy going back to poems I had commented on to see further comments, now I often can't be bothered.

Isobel, when you click on a blog to read it and then click the back button on your browser, give it a few seconds before touching your mouse.
The page immediately goes back to the last block and THEN finds your last place. It does take a couple of seconds though!

The tech team's current priority is moving the site over to a new ISP - a major but crucial task - then they'll be able to work on updates.

Unfortunately, both of them were caught out by the volcanic ash problem (one was in Portugal, the other New York) which has put their work on the site back at least 3 weeks - as well as work on the site their jobs have also been impacted as have their real world lives.

So we haven't moved as far as we'd hoped.

No worries Graham - I am grateful for you taking the time to help. I'm sure very many people must use Internet Explorer so are having the same problem as me. Let's hope a few of them read this discussion thread! LOL

Meanwhile, here in Wigan, I am still waiting for a cloud of volcanic ash to drift over and dump itself on my place of work. Overnight of course!

I think you have posted this in the wrong place Ann. I also think you are over-reacting. When you were a member of that art club, did you plaster the ceiling, walls and floors with all your personal artwork? If so, I can understand the backlash.

Hi, I'm having trouble with the WOL page on my computer at the moment. It's taking ages to load, particularly the blogs. First noticed it two days ago. It was fine yesterday, but problematic again today. It's maybe just my elderly computer, if no one else is having the same hassle? I can't believe it's just caused by the number of people blogging!!! That never used to be a problem

Greg - I've been having the same problem this morning, not with other programmes I have open just WOL, and as you say - particularly long when trying to open blogs.

Thanks for that, Chris, I'm glad it's not just me! Hopefully it's something our techies can look at, when they've got a spare moment. I trust it's not just down to the sheer popularity of the site. Could it even be the launch of Pandora's Box? This has brought home to me how much time I spend on this site, and how grumpy I get when it's not working properly!

Taking a long time for me too, and also yesterday. An additional nasty thing that popped out of Pandora's box - slow loading of WOL! Could even write a poem while I'm waiting (don't worry, just kidding, Isobel!) ;-)

So glad to read this - I thought it was my pc. Last time I had the same problem, my nephew spent hours trying to find the reason only to find out that I had a loose modem connection! The problem with pcs is that there are so many avenues to explore, from lack of space, to viruses, to faulty equipment, to problems on WOL....

p.s. I am rather envious of your ability to write good poetry so quickly Ann. I'm still labouring over my box and think it may get posted with the odd rusty nail sticking out of it.

Hi - is there anyone out there who can help?

Chris Co suggested using Firefox as a browser and said that that would help me retain my place in the blog queue, when looking through blogs.

I already have Mozilla Firefox but it doesn't work - does exactly the same as internet explorer. When I tried to look at downloading Firefox on its own - it seems it's the same thing as mozilla. Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong?

Don't want to piss on your strawberries but re WOL, it's all very quick again now. But maybe Firefox is the real deal anyway! ;-) PS Saw a lovely fox on my birthday! Seems like a good sign! Famous last words!!

I agree that WOL is much faster now Ann. I was referring to the problem where you couldn't return to where you were in blogs without going right back to the start.
I've since found that it will only take you back to end of the first set of blogs - but that isn't too bad cos when you get to the right set of blogs it seems to have held where you were. It probably wouldn't make sense to you unless you had the job of trogging through all the blogs looking for Pandora poems and compiling a list...
Suffice to say that with Firefox it isn't as onerous as it would have been otherwise.

Also, emails telling me of any comments only take me to WOLs home page, not the comment. I've told Paul and he's very helpful and it should be sorted. Just wondered if it was only me??

Any probs today are due to moving to a new server (funny, I didn't think Wimbledon was on yet - but then I HATE sport!!) I've had lots of info/help/advice from WOL angels today, telling me what's what. Maybe in future, if a big change is happening that might temporarily affect us there could be a message about it somewhere? Even as a blog? It might save the WOL experts time, not having to reassure computer idiots like me that the world has not ended! xx
