Organised by Culture24, Museums at Night will see hundreds of museums, galleries, libraries, archives and heritage sites open their doors for special evening events.

And Wolverhampton Art Gallery will be joining in the celebrations with a free event on Saturday (May 19, 2012) which will see artist Susan Stockwell take visitors on a guided tour of the gallery and create a new piece of art.

Visitors to the gallery “won” the visit from Susan after entering the Culture24 competition Connect 10, and she’ll be calling in to the Lichfield Street gallery between 4pm and 7pm to talk about her work.

Susan uses maps to create life-sized dresses exploring themes of empire and power and her creation made up of Ordnance Survey maps of the Scottish Highlands, Highland Dress, will be on display in the Victorian Gallery.

There will also be other Museums at Night activities at the gallery, including song and spoken word performances from Black Country poet Dave Reeves and Poet Marcia Calame who will be presenting her own interpretation of the theme of “empire”.

Dave will also give visitors a chance to join in his creative text workshop Hacked Haiku, where they can “hack” chunks from newspapers to reassemble them as haiku, a short Japanese form of poem.

Meanwhile, visitors will be invited to add their own contribution to a patchwork of squares celebrating the evening and find out how to make beads, necklaces and fridge magnets from old maps and books.
