Alfred is the author of nine books of poems, including Stake: Selected Poems, 1972-1992, which appeared in 1999, and, most recently, Contradictions, which appeared with Copper Canyon Press in 2002. For many years he taught in the graduate writing program of the School of the Arts at Columbia in New York City and his book reviews have appeared in The New York Times Book Review and The Nation, Poetry London, and The Wolf.
