READING SERIES 2008-09
STAND UP POETRY

LEE HARWOOD COMES TO BATH – CARRIE ETTER LAUNCHES HER FIRST COLLECTION

The final reading of the next cycle of this highly successful series will be held on Thursday June 11th 2009 at the Duncan Room, Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institute, 16-18 Queen Square, Bath, 8.pm. Tickets at the door: £6.00, £4.00 concessions.

It is our very great pleasure to announce that Lee Harwood is this month’s guest reader – and that Carrie Etter will launch her first full collection The Tethers.

Lee Harwood, who has lived in Brighton for more than forty years, has produced twenty books and has been publishing poetry since 1965, including translations of Tristan Tzara—a dazzling montage of work. Often attached by critics to the first generation of the New York School, with whom he was in close contact in the 1960s, Harwood has been described by the great American poet John Ashbery as British poetry’s “…best kept secret.” In fact, Harwood might be regarded as Ashbery’s mirror-image in UK, carrying equal presence and stature. As influenced by Dada and the Surrealists as he was by the New York School, the recipient of many awards and prizes, his erudite and gentlemanly tone make him one of the most respected elder statesmen of British Poetry.

Carrie Etter is an American expatriate who has published poetry in such journals as Jacket, The New Republic, The Republic of Letters, PN Review and the Times Literary Supplement. She has published two pamphlets: Subterfuge for the Unrequitable in 1998 and Yet in 2007. She is editing an anthology for Shearsman Books—Infinite Difference: Other Poetries by UK Women Poets, due Spring 2010. Her eagerly anticipated and highly energetic first full collection, The Tethers, of which Glyn Maxwell wrote “…Sorrowing, glad, graceful… a rich and significant debut” appears from Seren this month and will be launched at this reading; a further collection—Divining for Starters—will be published by Shearsman early in 2011. She teaches writing at Bath Spa University.

Come along for an evening of wine and superb poetry
