Scribblers ahoy!
"In the midst of darkness I light a candle."
We're fast approaching the mid-point between shortest day and spring equinox, 40 days after Xmas, when I take down my Xmas cards and other festive decorations - keeping them up through this month is the way to beat the January blues!
I've booked the drawing room on the first floor of the Eagle and Child, High Petergate, York, for our next workshop, on Sunday,3rd February, 2.30-5.30 pm.
And I'm looking forward to seeing what you've been creating and polishing up over the festive season that hasn't ended for me.
As usual, please bring copies of your work, 3 or 4 would be fine, your work not to exceed 2,000 words or four sides of A4, and £2 if you're waged, otherwise £1.
If you're stuck or fumbling for a theme, here are three names for February to ponder:
'Februa' has the meaning cleansing or purifying. To the Anglo-Saxons February was known as sol-monath, cake month, and the Welsh call it 'y mis bach', the little month .
A writing exercise, in some way connected with one or more of these themes, may be introduced during the workshop to enliven proceedings, but remember and be assured,scribblers, your work always takes pride of place over such exercises or diversions.
Till we gather the day after I extinguish the festive season at Candlemas, as Robert Herrick put it:
"Down with the rosemary and bays,
Down with the mistletoe;
In stead of holly now up-raise
The greener box (for show)."
With that I vanish to make merry with the last scraps of Christmas.
