WORD CLUB 5 will take place on Friday 29th May 2015, from 7.30 pm, at The Chemic Tavern, Leeds. Our headliners this month are Peter Spafford, Gary Kaye and Linda Marshall. as well as a host of ultra-talented open micers that would grace any open mic!
Peter Spafford has written for theatre, radio, and even for opera, but would love to be a poet when he grows up. He also plays music with Richard Ormrod.
Gary Kaye has been performing poetry at literary events and political demonstrations for the past 25 years. Gary won the Ilkely Literature Performance Poetry Prize in 2004 and was Poet in Residence at his beloved Leeds Utd from 2005 to 2008. He published a collection of his football poetry, A Fan for All Seasons in 2006. In recent years Gary has concentrated on his folk music, though his passion for poetry remains
Linda Marshall has had two collections of poetry published, Brakken City (Fighting Cock Press, 1997) and Half-Moon Glasses (Flux Gallery Press, 2009). For many years she was co-editor of Aireings poetry magazine. In 2012 she received a commission to write a poem in celebration of the centenary of Cottage Road Cinema, and in 2013 she took part in the Leeds Lieder event, working with a composer to create a song-poem. Linda has also written a series of poems that interpret paintings on a South Indian dance theme, exhibited in 2014. She has been a member of Pennine Poets and is now involved with Lucht Focail, a group of Irish writers, and takes part in readings in and around Leeds. One of her performance poems was recently included The Garden anthology (OWF, 2014).
We have plenty of open mics slots available, so please come along and beguile us with your work. Time will be restricted to 3 minutes per person. Please time your work and stick to your 3 minutes so everyone can have an equal slot. Please see me (Mark Connors) on arrival to put your name down. We will do our best to fit everyone in but it won’t do your chances any harm if you arrive a bit earlier.
