Open Mic Event

Contact: rosecondo@gmail.com

32 Flavours is a night of women’s voices…served up as poetry, prose, story and song.

We’ve gathered together a range of rich voices, raw words and righteous writers to perform on the night.

Presented by poets Rose Condo and Norah Hamill, the evening will feature performances from artists including Jolene Rae-Walsh, Henna Can, Marina Poppa, Fran Wyburn and singing trio Tyranny of Voice.

We’ve also got a few open mic spots available. Contact Rose Condo at rosecondo@gmail.com if you’d like to sign up.

Even though it’ll be only women behind the mic on the night, the event is open for all to attend.

The event is free but do bring a bit of cash to buy yourself a lovely drink and cake from Coffee Evolution. We’ll also be passing the hat during the evening and the proceeds will go to the Women’s Centre and to the Huddersfield One Billion Rising event in February 2015.

Plus…hot off the presses…Norah Hamill will have her new book of poetry, Mango 11’s available for sale. All proceeds go towards the White Ribbon Campaign.

And…just in case you were wondering…the title for our event is inspired by American folk rocker Ani Difranco, whose song of the same name gives an inspiring glimpse into the multi-faceted nature of being a girl.

About the artists…

Rose Condo is a performance poet who hails from the Canadian prairies and currently calls West Yorkshire her home. Last summer she performed her solo spoken word show, The Geography of Me, at the Edinburgh Fringe, and has toured the show to London and her home city of Winnipeg. Rose regularly takes part in open mic and poetry slam events around the North of England.

Published in anthologies and on-line Norah Hamill has recently been sponsored by The White Ribbon Campaign to publish one of her collections, 'Mango 11's' which has been described as 'An intelligently written, bold and thought provoking collection.' It weaves Norah's personal experiences with the stories of other females she identifies with. Originally from West Belfast and settling in West Yorkshire. Norah is predominantly known for her activism and saying it as it is. She has worked extensively with the vulnerable and marginalized. Norah has also worked with Amnesty International she ignited and co-ordinates the https://www.facebook.com/pages/Huddersfield-One-Billion-Rising/389783327763463?fref=ts …along with many other grass-root movements locally. Norah considers spoken word as an extension of her activism.

Jolene Rae-Walsh is a positive thinker and wearer of many hats. She is a keen writer of stories and poetry, largely relating to self-exploration and personal development. She's passionate about Huddersfield and is proud to be involved in the creative scene here.

Henna Can is a TV presenter, a student and a chocoholic amongst other things. She’s a hopeless optimistic who always wears rose tinted glasses.

Fran Wyburn is a new folk influenced singer songwriter based in Leeds. She loves writing songs that capture moments in time hence the title of her new EP 'Little Moments.' Fran usually plays with a band that is very harmony driven, however she loves the intimacy of a stripped down set with just her guitar.

Tyranny of Voice are Jenny Goodman, Leisa Gray and Maggie O'Keeffe blending their distinctive voices to deliver stunning harmonies on the everything from pop classics to Emily Dickinson poems... expect spine tingling moments and quirky interludes.

Marina Poppa is an Artist and Activist, who makes Art that makes a Difference. Her wise words recently won her first prize at Leeds Word Emporium Poetry Slam, a guest appearance with A Firm of Poets and that all-important warm fuzzy feeling you get when you face your fears. You know the one.
