Open Mic Event

Contact: popupoetry@gmail.com

Dónall Dempsey and Jan Windle began hosting poetry, song and spoken word events at the Bar des Arts at the beginning of 2012, and now host Pop Up Poets regularly on the third Tuesday of each month. We normally invite two or three guests to feature (20 minute sets), and the rest of the evening is devoted to the open mic (5 minute spots). We have a loyal group of regulars but every month we meet new poets and audience members who come back to enjoy the warm welcome they find in this stylish but intimate venue. The events are normally free. Bring your enthusiasm and your poems and songs, and join in, as performer or audience.

We published a book of Pop Up Poets' readers' work at the end of 2013 and we plan to publish another Pop Up Anthology at the end of 2014. We are looking for poems for this year's book between now and July 2014. All contributors wiill keep ownership and copyright of their own poems, of course.

We welcome back Murray Shelmerdine with his acoustic guitar and his irreverent songs this month, together with Cheryl Mclennan and Thomas Thurman and the wonderful Mel Jones.

Murray Shelmerdine runs "Words and Music in the Woods", the most supportive and relaxed monthly poetry and music venue we know in London. His evenings, poetically hosted by the lively Alan Wolfson, are at the Queens Wood Cafe (http://queenswoodcafe.co.uk/) on the first Thursday of the month. Murray's satirical lyrics and songs are always a delight.

Thomas Thurman shows no sign of running out of things to discover. He may also be found fixing computers or writing story-books. His ambition is to find the secret of becoming a squirrel so that he can hide in trees and compose sonnets all winter. Thomas is no stranger to the platform at the Bar des Arts. We're thoroughly looking forward to a feature set from the only man we know who can recite "How Horatio Kept the Bridge" in full and follow it up with "Kit's Knickers" sung to the tune of "Tit Willow" by Gilbert and Sullivan! Thomas probably won't do either of those things on 15th, though, because we've heard he has several new poems for us.

Cheryl's reputation as the tallest story-teller in London has gone before her! We're looking forward to hearing more of her unlikely tales of delinquent tortoises and other curiosities, told in her inimitably humorous style. Cheryl is a popular performer on the London circuit. Her website is at http://www.cherylmclennan.com./

And BREAKING NEWS - lovely Mel Jones is coming down to Guildford again! Mel is the writer and star of "Stand-Up Tragedy" (http://www.standuptragedy.co.uk/acts/mel-Jones), a monthly show alternating between Hackney and Brixton, as well as the co-host of "Friggers of Speech" She is a multiple slam winner and a lovely lady. She tells us that she wants to show Guildford her sensitive poetic side this month but we suspect a little spice will season her set too!

Dónall Dempsey hosts the night as usual with flair and panache and verve (and a poem or two.)

Sign up for the open mic from 7pm onwards, or just come along and enjoy the show at 7.30!
