Join us for a fun filled night of poetry and song with Manchester Irish Writers, Tony Walsh (Longfella) and also singer/song writer Matt Hill, Quiet Loner.

Read on for a little more information on the performers:
The Manchester Irish Writers group has been in existence for 19 years and has progressed from a small number to a team of 12 very enthusiastic and ambitious writers at various levels in the development.
It was founded by Rose Morris and Alrene Hughes in 1994 at the Irish World Heritage Centre. Alrene, an author, then became the group Co-ordinator. She brought to the group her experience of being involved in other writers groups (ex Commomword and Bury Writers) and of having had her own stories and poetry published.
We meet fortnightly and our members have gained in confidence culminating in many dramatic performances and poetry reading sessions and the publication of five books: At The End of the Rodden, a collection of stories and poetry, a long term aim achieved after two years, and The Retting Dam, a collection of poetry launched by Polly Devlin OBE at the 2001 Irish Festival. Stone Of The Heart was launched in the 2002. In the 2004 Irish Festival we launched two new books: Kerry Child to Limerick Lady, the late Ida Kennelly's autobiography edited by her daughter Manchester Irish Writer, Marion Riley, and Drawing Breath, a collection of monologues first performed by the Writers in the Royal Exchange Theatre in September 2003.
We set up our own publishing company called: Scribhneoiri ( Gaelic word for Writers) and have recognized ISBN numbers on all our publications.

Tony Walsh (also known as Longfella) is ‘one of the UK’s most renowned performance poets.’ A favourite on the festival circuit, he’s electrified audiences at prestigious poetry, literary and music events around the UK, in Ireland and beyond. His poetry has been commissioned by BBC television and radio, and published in the UK, the USA and Russia. Tony was recently invited to write the official tribute poem to Sir Alex Ferguson on the occasion of the unveiling of the re-named Sir Alex Ferguson Way outside Old Trafford. “Absolutely brilliant!” “Unbelievable!” said Sir Alex, joining many famous names who have praised Tony’s performances.
With a dad from County Cavan, Tony is a regular visitor to the Emerald Isle where he “stole the show” at Strokestown International Poetry Festival in Co Roscommon earlier this year before earning a standing ovation in Belfast on the same trip. He has performed at the opening ceremony of Manchester Irish Festival and organised an acclaimed series of “Poets On Craic” shows for the festival programme a few years ago.

Quiet Loner (Matt Hill) is one of the UK’s leading Americana artists with a string of 5-star and 10/10 reviews for his new album of contemporary protest songs, “Greedy Magicians.” Fresh from a tour of the Netherlands and a slot on Billy Bragg’s Leftfield stage at Glastonbury, his understated but powerful songs attract favourable comparisons to names like Elvis Costello and Billy Bragg. Expect country and folk-influenced music of the highest order and maybe the odd cover version thrown in from this massive fan of country music and Elvis. http://quietloneruk.wordpress.com/about/
