The Ann Arbor Poetry Slam is one of the longest-tenured slams in the nation. It was founded in 1987 by Vince Keuter, second only to the Uptown Poetry Slam at the Green Mill in Chicago. The Ann Arbor ran consecutively for more than 20 years thanks to the work of staples like Larry Francis.
After a brief hiatus, the slam was revived in 2013 by slam veteran Lindsay Stone.

Currently, the Ann Arbor Poetry Slam is hosted and run by slammaster Tariq Luthun and Co-organizer Garret Potter. The events consist of an open mic, features by professional poets, and the slam. They take place every Sunday evening at Silvio's Organic Pizza. The events are held with the goal of offering community members a means to express themselves creatively and engage others through poetry in what is a safe and brave space. They are free and open to the public.

The Ann Arbor Poetry Slam team is the reigning Regional Poetry Slam champion, and ranks in the top half of all slams across the nation following their performance at the 2014 National Poetry Slam in Oakland
