NEXT QUILT

The birth of a quilt
is rather like the birth of a poem.
If the fizz doesn’t come on its own,
I search in a dictionary of ideas,
refine what I find into the germ of a design.
Then in the thesaurus of fabrics and threads
I pick and choose the shades to use,
with scraps or new depends on the purse,
the size and the chosen form.
Decisions taken, then comes the making,
long and laborious, by hand or machine,
unpicking, re-stitching, the results can be glorious.
Quilt it by hand while watching TV,
Embroider a label to finish the job,
give it away and start on the NEXT
